7 Signs It Could Be Perimenopause & Not Just Stress
15 Jun 2026If you’ve been feeling more tired, anxious, overwhelmed or simply unlike yourself lately, you are not alone. Many women in their late 30s, 40s and early 50s notice changes they cannot quite explain.
It is common to assume it is “just stress.” Life at this stage can be busy and demanding. But for many women, hormonal changes linked to perimenopause may also be playing a part.
Perimenopause is the natural transition before menopause, when hormone levels begin to fluctuate. It can start several years before periods stop completely, and symptoms can vary from person to person.
Here are seven gentle signs that perimenopause may be worth considering.
1. Hot Flushes
Hot flushes and night sweats can begin during perimenopause, not only after menopause.
You might notice:
- Sudden warmth in the face or chest
- Sweating at nigh
- Feeling hotter than others around you
2. Period Changes
One of the earliest signs can be a change in your usual cycle.
You may notice:
- Periods arriving earlier or later
- Heavier or lighter bleeding
- Missed periods
- Shorter or longer cycles
Even subtle changes can be a clue that hormones are shifting.
3. Feeling More Anxious, Emotional or Irritable
Many women tell us they suddenly feel less patient, more tearful, anxious or easily overwhelmed.
This can feel confusing, especially if you have always coped well before. Hormonal fluctuations can affect mood and emotional resilience.
4. Poor Sleep
Sleep Is Not as Good as It Used to Be
You may find yourself:
- Waking in the early hours
- Struggling to fall back asleep
- Feeling restless overnight
- Waking tired
Sleep changes are common in perimenopause and can have a big impact on mood, energy and confidence.
5. Brain Fog
If you feel forgetful, less focused, mentally tired or not quite as sharp, you are not imagining it.
Many women experience brain fog during perimenopause, often made worse by poor sleep and stress.
6. Tired All The Time
Some women describe feeling drained even after resting.
This may look like:
- Low motivation
- Afternoon crashes
- Reduced stamina
- Needing more effort to do normal tasks
7. Not Feeling Like Yourself
This is one of the most common things women say.
You may feel:
- Less confident
- Flat or disconnected
- More sensitive
- More reactive
- Unlike the person you usually are
These feelings are real, valid, and often have an explanation.
